The Summer of George

If you’re a Seinfeld fan, you know exactly what the title of this post is referring to. If you’re not, well, maybe you were drawn in by the curiosity of just what is going on here today.

Have you ever fantasized about quitting your job and spending a few months chasing your dreams? Or thought that maybe your company has some unheard of policy about sabbaticals…you just have to know who to talk to and have the right timing, but sure, they’ll hold your job and give you some much needed time off to take a break and clear your head. Yeah, right.

In the Seinfeld episode I refer to in the title of this post George gets to do exactly that. He has 3 months severance pay from his job at the Yankees and he’s going to make the most of it. He’s going to:

read a book, from beginning to end, in that order;

learn to play frolf, frisbee-golf, golf with a frisbee; and

taste the fruits and let the juices drip down his chin.

He proclaims it “The Summer of George”.

Why am I writing about this today? Well, my husband is flirting with the idea of having his own Summer of George. Work is dissatisfying and he’s decided maybe it’s time to take a break. We’ve got a checklist of things that need to be done before he takes this plunge, but he’s convinced me that this is something that he needs. I’m a stay-at-home-mom so the idea of this initially scared the pants off me, but after some soul searching I’m supporting this bold move.

Our to-do list may not be as ambitious as George’s above, but there are things that we’d like to do…

Of course, the Hubs wants to spend more time with our daughter.

And there is a class he wants to take… which led me to think hey, maybe I’ll get to take a class too. And we’ll take trips, and get projects done around the apartment that we never have time for. We’ll brew kombucha and make our own beer!

What do you think? Have you ever had a Summer of George or dreamed of one? What would you do if you suddenly had 3 months off from work? Help me out, we need some good ideas. I thought I was just going to be hanging out blowing bubbles all summer long..but now the possibilities are endless!

  1. I’ve really been trying to figure out how I could do this the past few weeks. I have been feeling well burn out from working in the NHS for way too many years.

  2. Oh, the possibilities are endless & this time for you all would be such a gift. In New York, I’d definitely do things on weekdays that get more crowded on weekends – the beach, picnic in Central Park. And lots of daytrips!

  3. I’d say hit up the beach for a little bit if you’ve got the chance, read more books, catch up on some movies as a family, plan and cook some fun meals, or take it on the road for a ROAD TRIP!!!!
