On archiving…..somewhat.

Last month, I had an issue with my external hardrive and that led me to do some research on archiving my images via the “cloud” and the best cloud service to archive with, thus far for me, it’s Flickr and Amazon. While archiving, I went through my images from the last few years and I had a realization that I need to start taking more photos of my family as they are, not posed, because those are the memories that I treasure most. A friend of mine was also going through her archives and noticed that she and her husband took more photos of their food then of themselves. In ten years time, will we even care what we ate on a particular day? Of course not, but we will care that we did not take enough photos of our loved ones.

Yes, we all love the beautiful images with the perfect settings and their best smiles. But, more importantly, the photo of your kid making the I’m not smiling for you face, or the image of them immersed in an activity and don’t even know you’ve snuck up to take the photo. I’m talking about those images. The perfectly imperfect photo, the photo you will look back on and are thankful that you took it.

I am now making a conscious effort of taking more photos of the people around me and less of food.

  1. I love your beautiful food and flower images, but you are so right. Not only will these be the ones that mean the most to you, they will also mean the most to those who follow. While hunting for a document yesterday, I stumbled across some of my dad’s old photos. The travel photography was lovely, but the photos of him and his mom, both long gone stopped me dead in my tracks.
