318810020004-3So, I guess it’s time for me to finally admit I’m transitioning to film. Yes, you heard correctly, I’m leaving digital to go and shoot film. FOREVER. Or, at least, for a long time… I’m coming out of the closet, like I always knew deep down I would. I’m not ashamed, I admit it consciously. And with a relief; knowing what it will mean to me and others. A change. A change I’m proud of. A difficult acceptance, I know, but one I am ready to face and am proud of. Always will be.

You might all think, “Yes, it’s “in” right now; most of your friends are doing it so that is why YOU are doing it”. You might be right, peer pressure does kind of work that way in many cases, but that’s not the reason why I am finally transitioning to film.

I am devoted to film right now because I believe in learning. I believe in learning what a photographer needs to know about photography, light, and composition. I believe in THINKING about what you are about to shoot, taking every element around you into account before you release your shutter. I believe in slowing down to think about your light, your subject, your composition… I believe in keeping it simple; letting the image come to you. And it does. Believe me, it does.

40620002I believe in a communion between your camera and you. I believe in getting it right the first time. Not wasting a gazillion photos thinking, “Nah, no worries, I can edit that later…”. And, most of all, I believe in following your heart. Right now, my heart says, “Shoot film. You were born to do this.”…

I believe in film. And I am in love. Out of the closet in love. No turning back for me… Maite

  1. I understand your motivations, and you know well, share many of them. That isn’t why I’m so happy to read this, though. It’s because I see the joy in your photos, always beautiful, but lately with a little extra something. And of course, I can not wait to see what your beautiful island on film and with this fresh enthusiasm.

    • Oh, Debbie, thanks for the encouragement. I have noticed something different too lately… I can’t wait for my summer images either! xo

  2. goosebumps as I read this.
I only shoot film on occasion, but I feel its pull too…for so many of the reasons you’ve listed here.
cheering you and looking forward to all the images to come…

  3. What great images! And I do love the way film causes us to slow down the frantic pace of snapping shots.

  4. I love this post so much, Maite. I don’t even shoot film (except for a pack of polaroid now and then), but everything you say about how you shoot resonates so much. And like Stacy, you inspire me to give film a try!
