Mirage

Our recent California vacation included a day in Palm Springs (hello, hot weather!) and a stop at this amazing art installation titled “Mirage.” It’s the work of artist Doug Aitken and part of the Desert X art festival in the Coachella Valley.

The ranch style house has no doors or windows, just openings to views of the San Jacinto mountains and desert below. Covered inside and out in mirrored surfaces, it both reflects and distorts the landscape and the viewers.

The day we visited, a hot wind was whipping through and around the house. It was a popular place for selfies and capturing unusual optical illusions. Every room, every angle gave a different view and mood.

While the other pieces in the Desert X collection were removed from exhibition in April, “Mirage” will remain open through the end of October. If you’re anywhere in the area, I highly recommend a trip to see this amazing installation!
