WORDS AND PICTURES

I never set out to pair words with pictures, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. Sometimes when I see the photograph, the words quickly pour into my mind. It also happens the other way around – I read or hear the words, and I know to save them for later, when the right photograph comes along.

Often it’s words I’ve stumbled upon in a book…

“We wake, if we ever wake at all, to mystery, rumors of death, beauty, violence…” – Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, by Annie Dillard
“This is an interesting planet. It deserves all the attention you can give it.”
Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson
“Existence has greater depths of beauty, mystery, and benediction than the wildest visionary has ever dared to dream.” – Frederick Buechner

Sometimes they are lyrics in a song…

“I don’t know where,
I don’t know how,
I don’t know why,
But your Love can make these things better.”
These Ordinary Days by Jars Of Clay
The troubles of this world
Will wither up and die
That river of tears made by the lonely
Someday will be dry
There’s gonna be a great rejoicing
Great Rejoicing by Thad Cockrell
You’ll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold
Fields of Gold by Sting

Sometimes it’s just a random quote that fits…

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.”
― John Muir
“I’ve always liked the time before dawn because there’s no one around to remind me who I’m supposed to be, so it’s easier to remember who I am” — StoryPeople

It’s not that I think the images needed the words, or were incomplete without them. Rather, they just fit together. It’s as simple as that.

Eyes wide open,

Chinwe

  1. Beautiful! I love how images can inspire words and visa versa.
