Be Our Guest: Going Slow

I’m so pleased that Theresa “tdoeswool” agreed to be our guest blogger this month.  I have followed her since the active days of flickr, and now enjoy her posts on Instagram.  She’s from the eastern United States, and says about her life and work, “I’m living a slow life with the children grown…and doing my photography for me now…selfish maybe, but it’s so satisfying not to have deadlines.”  She’s an amazing fiber artist and knitter, and her photography captures the magic and motion of her days.  Her images seem handcrafted as well, enhanced with light and texture that mimics her fiber work.

In an age of acceleration, nothing can be more exhilarating than going slow. And in an age of distraction, nothing is so luxurious as paying attention. And in an age of constant movement, nothing is so urgent as sitting still….so I sit…and as the diamond needle drops to the vinyl record, the familiar scratching sounds awaken me;  I pick up my knitting, and my mind settles…it’s then I think of photography… my camera, the itch to photograph something for the singular pleasure of remembrance, of creating.

A few rows into my project and I see the light, I grab my camera and go, sometimes with a specific intent, but the camera eye leads me as well.

I do this for me. Selfishly, for me.

Some of my favorite work was of the girls when then were growing up. So candid, so sweet, so innocent. Those are my favorites. They have saved a moment in time, but taught me what I have lost as well.

And then I play, carefully adding a layer or texture to my photos, letting the subject be my guide to the final one….until I feel it..

That’s how I create, these days, quietly, slowly, and with attention.
