a little night mode

Have you experimented with the Apple iPhone’s newish night mode? I upgraded to the iPhone 11 pro in the fall, and really didn’t play with the night mode feature at first. Sometimes it kicked in when I wasn’t really paying attention. When I later looked at the resulting images, I was impressed. They were clearly better than the night images I had taken with my former iPhone 10.

Night photography was something that intrigued me when I started getting passionate about photography ten or so years ago. You can see some of my early and often rough attempts on my old flickr page. Many are a bit cringeworthy, but there are others, especially my moon shots, that I still love.

Recently I’ve been walking to work in the morning along historic Route 6A here on Cape Cod, and then trekking home at the end of the day in the dusk or dark. So I’ve had the opportunity to play with iPhone night mode under different lighting conditions. I’ve tested it out in other places around the Cape, on a recent trip to New York City, and even indoors for a portrait of my honey. Here’s what I’ve captured:

Turkeys headed to bed
A house ablaze with light
The Chrysler Building in New York City
A free sofa in the dusk
Sunset pond
Home
A cozy cottage
Cape Playhouse by moonlight
Dan by iPad light

These images are by no means technically perfect, but I love that this iPhone feature adds a new tool to play with in my photography toolbox.

Have you played with night mode? Share your thoughts in the comments. We’d love to hear what you think, and see your results.

See you soon. Much love.

  1. Love these, Lucy! They look perfect to me and the one of the Chrylser Building has the look of Cinestill film.

  2. These are wonderful. I need a new phone so badly, I think you have convinced me to do it.
