The Action Is the Juice

We’re experiencing a hellaciously, hot heat wave here in Philadelphia. And I mean HOT, as in fry-an-egg-on-your-car’s-hood hot! As a result, I’ve been walking my dog Gibson early in the morning to try and beat the heat before the sizzling temperatures rise up into record-breaking territory.

Now usually at this time of year–especially during a heat wave–my neighborhood’s shine tends to wear off. Truthfully, it doesn’t just wear off, it dives deep into unrespectable dinginess. Our gardens wilt, the trash and recycling piles up while the steam rises up from the pavement (along with the trash day smell)! But instead of noticing dirt and despair, I’ve been finding bits of beauty everywhere I look! It’s been amazing!

The morning glories are in bloom!

From afar, I thought this Maple tree’s red seeds looked like apples!

Every year I look forward to the Russian Sage at this house.

Sunflowers and sun flare and Crepe Myrtle, oh my!

Overall, though, I think my attitude’s changed. Yes the dirt and trash and slow slide into disrepair surrounds me, I’m just not noticing it. Instead, I’m pulling out my camera phone every time I see those bits of beauty regardless of composition; I’m just happy to capture it! And since I’ve been in an “instant” kind of mood, I edited my photos with VSCO’s Polaroid presets!

How have you been noticing the grace in your worlds? Have you been capturing it too? I certainly hope so! After all…

Until next time,

  1. Love this. I’ve also been getting out early to beat the heat, and it’s amazing how different the world looks at 7am than in the late afternoon, when I usually walk. I’m really enjoying it.

  2. A lovely thing for me to read this morning! Thank you❤️

  3. Yes! There’s always beauty to be found in each day. It’s good for our souls to always be looking for it.
