We believe in pulling the car over to capture the view.

*******

My family got used to the routine long ago. My barely perceptible inhale followed by a quiet, “oh. wow.” from the passenger seat.

“Do you want me to pull over? Do you want me to turn around,” he’ll ask?

I’ll pause for a beat and reply, “um. yes, please. The light is so beautiful right now”

Quick as you can make a u-turn, and he can pull a u-ie on a dime, we’re back to the spot where I took in that little bit of air. And before the car comes to a complete stop, I’m off with my familiar, “I’ll only be a few minutes, kids. Promise!”

I try to be good to my word so they’ll oblige me without protest the next time. A few frames is usually all it takes, and then we’re back on course.

Over in the passenger seat, I’m full up on the heady feeling of having just spent a little while lingering with whatever took my breath away. And maybe, hopefully, having made an image that will allow me to come back and visit with it again.

  1. This is just beautiful. Still trying to figure out how to navigate around but I went directly to your page Deborah because, well firstly I recognized the rainbow dolphins! xo Beautiful website. Is this in place of mortal muses? I wasn’t sure what happened with MM exactly and I had heard it had a new direction it would be taking. Is this it?

  2. It is, Tracie, a bit of an evolution, but lots of the same players, and, obviously, some new and still pinching themselves ones, speaking only for myself.
The best place to start is the Manifesto video, and then just dive in anywhere, I think it’s all beautiful!

  3. You know that my favorite image of the bunch is “forsaken” — I knew it was going to be great when we pulled over. I believe that that image being on the cross-processed film roll came a surprise — am I remembering correctly? That was the kicker that pushed it from being a really good scene to a photograph that I truly love.

    • You remember correctly. I was changing film so fast and furious on vacation, between two cameras, I had lost track of what was in her. Both the Clayton Theatre stop and this farmhouse were on the same roll, and I remember being a little stricken when I unloaded the film because in my mind I’d made these images on Portra. Sometimes you get a happy accident.

    • I have a life-long dream of road tripping the Pacific Coast Highway, Kim . . . and Rte 66 . . . and Rte 1 from Maine to Miami . . . and so many points in between, blue highways all the way. And I’d love company!

  4. You have such a gift for infusing magic into forgotten places, Debbie. I’m such a huge fan! Love seeing you here, and hearing about how these special places find their way to you!

  5. It is truly a wonderful thing to have you partner be your number one champion & fan, Holly.

  6. I guess the name gives me away – OK, so I admit,it I’m her Mom. But I know it’s not prejudice to say her work is not only beautiful, but moving and touchingly nostalgic. Very, very proud. Love.
