Color photography is my foundation. I have been photographing, editing and printing almost exclusively in color for many years now. I feel a deep connection to color in all of its complexities, and I find that my color work is moving in a more painterly direction. But after a very long stretch of working with vivid colors, I decided to challenge myself to cull through my archives and find gems that might translate well into black and white. Today I am sharing a collection of my black and white photographs along with a few quotes that I found helpful as I shifted my mindset to monochrome.
“What I love about Black & White photographs is that they’re more like reading the book than seeing the movie” – Jennifer Price
“One very important difference between color and monochromatic photography is this: in black and white you suggest; in color you state. Much can be implied by suggestion, but statement demands certainty… absolute certainty.” – Paul Outerbridge
“Black and white is abstract; color is not. Looking at a black and white photograph, you are already looking at a strange world.” – Joel Sternfeld
“Black and white photography erases time from the equation.” – Jason Peterson

These are so good Deb; some of them almost dreamlike, while others so vivid in their telling of a story. Great quotes too.
Thank you so much, Cathy. It’s fun to switch it up now and then. xoxo Deb
