my heart belongs to the river

I love the river in the morning when the sun rises in all its splendour to seperate the water from the sky, and I love it in the evening when the deepening shadows on the tree-lined shore form a contoured colonnade.

I am a city girl at heart, whereas my husband is drawn to the charms of small farming communities and the laid back lifestyle of coastal towns. He dreaded the idea of moving to the city so much that when the time came for us to relocate for work and schools, he had one request: we must live near water.

Fortunately, we found our home in a suburb close to Perth City and just a short stroll from the picturesque Canning River.

I had my city, and he had his water.

Most days, we walk our dog along this well-loved route, immersing ourselves in the tranquility of nature’s surroundings, while commuters zip across the bridge in the near distance and further away the city sits bold and magnificent on the skyline.

Over the years, I have come to fully appreciate the river in all its seasons. But there is something truly magical about an overcast day when the interplay of sun and clouds turns the landscape into scenes that are distinctly unique and beautiful.

If someone had told me years ago that I would end up living close to this beautiful place, I would not have believed them. I knew that one day I’d return to the city I grew up in, but I never thought I’d live near one of its rivers. Now I can’t imagine being anywhere else.

I am a city girl, but my heart belongs to the river.

Are you drawn to the bustle of city life, or do you prefer the peacefulness of the water? Perhaps the wide open spaces of the countryside call to you, or maybe you find solace among the tall trees in a forest? Where does your heart belong? I’d love to know.
