A trip down memory lane

It’s December again and time for the yearly tradition of moving furniture around to make room for the Christmas tree that was being delivered last week. We live in a small apartment and we like a big tree, so things have to move around. One of those things that had to move is an old wooden trunk that hides photo albums and boxes of old analog prints. It had to be emptied before we could move it and so the boxes came out. I made the mistake of opening one… needless to say that what was supposed to be a quick moving around of furniture took a bit longer than planned…

The box I opened contained photos of a trip long ago, from June to September 1990, when my ex-husband and I bought a couple of large backpacks, two Eurail passes and planned a three months trip across Europe. We started in England, where he was born and ended the trip in France, where I was born, with Wales, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain and Portugal in between.

I took my Canon AE1 Program along and at the time finding film everywhere was easy, as film was all there was. I came back with loads of finished rolls (I can’t remember what type of film I shot) and had hundreds of photos developed when we returned to Canada.

So I spent time last week traveling back in time and then scanning some of the photos. I am so glad that the only way to see your photos at the time was to get them developed and printed. I have loads of photos of my boys when they were young, all filed in photo albums, but today I don’t often print photos, not even my film ones. Today my photos mostly live on my computer, on my phone or on Facebook and Instagram and while I look back at them from time to time, for me there is nothing quite like flipping through a pile of photos on paper for a trip down memory lane.

I wish you all a sweet and peaceful end of the year.

Valérie
