I’m excited to share a guest post from a long-time contact and “plant sister” of mine, Carolyn Eicher whose beautiful work has touched me for years since we first met back in the early days of Instagram. Carolyn’s bright and airy flower series has always stuck me with its elegance and delicate beauty. I asked her if she could share more of her flowers here with you today. I know you’ll love her work as much as I do.

The practice of flower photography became a routine that I looked forward to like meeting a friend regularly for a cup of tea. Each time I bring flowers into my home, I never know what’s going to happen when they are my subject. When I take off the lens cap, my practice starts and the dialogue with flowers begins.

I don’t remember the first time I started to take pictures of flowers. When I look back through my files, some of my flower images were taken ten, fifteen, even twenty years ago.

l photograph flowers with my macro lens so I can zoom in on tiny details that I can’t see with my eyes.

Sometimes I photograph flowers when they dry and become sculptural in a way that I never could have predicted.

Often I photograph flowers when I’m outside on a walk. I notice flowers in my neighborhood as they change through the seasons.

Flowers have been my friends through times of a lot of transition. I show up for them and they show up for me. As my family has been through illness and loss, I am reminded of the importance of photographing flowers. The flowers beckon me, even for a few minutes, to step away from a place of worry.

The habit of photographing flowers creates moments where I make space in my life. My overactive mind begins to slow down, and I get very quiet and still and focused.

Flowers are my friends that are waiting for me. They are like a new friend and an old friend. I will always be there for them, ready to share their quiet beauty.
