It’s a black-and-white issue, we say, meaning that it is clear what is right and what is wrong, or that there is only one interpretation possible.
There are shades of grey, we say, meaning the opposite, that there are many viewpoints to consider, or that it is not straightforward what is right and what is wrong.
And then we talk about black and white photography, which is in both black and white and shades of grey, and means neither, but is rather just about life.
