The Softer Side of Light

I like to lose myself in the softer side of light. That space between high-noon and dusk hidden behind curtains, blinds and frosted glass. Beautiful, diffused rays filtered through elastic clouds and generous overhangs where my cameras and I escape at mid-day protected from gloomy shadows where details disappear into obscurity. Perhaps even protected from the shadier thoughts that seem to takeover my mind before I realize that it’s happening.

While we bathe in the soft radiance that sneaks through, I turn my lens to capturing what’s around me. White walls. Yellow toenails. The dishwasher on a winter’s day. Taking a bath in the middle of the afternoon just because I can. Even a vacation vista on a dusty road is more intriguing surrounded by a dense layer of clouds threatening rain that never comes.

My camera’s don’t lie. They capture the truth residing in the softness. They capture the way everything seems smoother while bathed in this light. They capture simplicity and loveliness and the delicate nature of normalcy that I often take for granted. And in these moments, I take a deep breath in, exhaling the shadows inside of me, for there is no room for darkness in the softer side of light.

  1. oh Holly! This is just so very pretty! I love the “lightness” of it all. I finally got the last two issues of Bella Grace and I see you have images and words in both. Have yet to sit quietly and enjoy your words. I can’t wait to sit with a nice drink and treat myself. xo

  2. Holly, these are absolutely stunning. the light, the lines and softness even though there is so much bright. Fantastic work my friend!
