There is just something about watching my child flying a kite, that evokes a swell of emotion in me. The symbolism of a kite as a classic childhood moment with its fun energy, freedom and innocence always pulls me back to shooting these kite-flying images again and again.
And I have certainly shot plenty of them over the years. Every family holiday the kite comes with us, ready-to-go as soon as a kite flying opportunity presents itself.
From behind my camera I’ve watched my son grow in confidence, from the child who had no idea what he was doing, to the one who understands when it is perfect kite flying weather.
To fly a kite you need space to run, and Mother Nature helping provide just the right amount of breeze.
You also need to be willing to take a risk and launch your kite up into the air. Will it soar, or will it crash to the ground?
As a Mother, I see the kite soaring up high into the sky just like my own dreams for my growing boy. Watching how he reacts to the times the kite smashes into the ground, has been fascinating over the years; the child who would literally pack up his kite and go home at the slightest set back, has developed into one keen to try a new technique. Still, sometimes a kite will come crashing down, and you need to be willing to take that risk.
Pick yourself back up and try again
Oh but the joy when you are on top of the world flying your kite higher and higher, makes all those set backs worth it.
Watching Theo through my camera lens, my heart is soaring as high as that kite.
Soar high my child, your future is calling.

Beautiful photos Rebecca! My husband’s family used to have a kite-flying day when they’d all get together and just fly kites! Thank you so much for being out guest!
