Looking for the Good

My word for this year is Good.

I set a goal for myself in January to spend some time each month looking for the good in my life. I didn’t want to solve all of my problems with this one word. I simply wanted to observe all the goodness around me and capture it.

“So, what if, instead of thinking about solving your whole life, you just think about adding additional good things. One at a time. Just let your pile of good things grow.” -Rainbow Rowell

I set out to observe my life, capture a photo, and add simply let my pile of good things grow.

It has not always been easy. Sometimes looking for the good isn’t always easy, especially when the world is so heavy. It almost seems frivolous to photograph the mundane, no matter how good, when so much is happening in the world.

But if there’s one thing that I’ve learned from this photography habit it is this – stories matter.

Particularly, my friends, your story matters. There is no one better than you to tell your story, to photograph your story, and to find the good in your story.

So I’ve kept going, making an effort to find the goodness in my life even when it is hard. Sometimes it takes a perspective shift – I get to take photos of my life. Sometimes it’s just the act of having my camera with me – this feels good right now.

I hope that you can find some good in your life, even when the world is so heavy.
