What is Enough?

In past years, I’ve used the start of a new year as a time to dream up new projects or set fresh goals. The New Year has always felt like a natural marker for new beginnings, and this approach has served me well in the past. But this year feels different. Instead of the usual push to start something new, I find myself reflecting on what’s already here—what habits, practices, and aspects of my life are already working and bringing me joy. How can I nurture these things further? What’s enough for now?

This line of thinking has extended to my photography hobby, where I’m asking myself: What about photography truly lights me up? And, What habits help me practice consistently and meaningfully?

Looking back at the past year, I’ve noticed a few key things that motivate me to pick up my camera. For one, travel is always a strong motivator. Whether I’m exploring my beautiful home state of California or wandering through the ancient streets of Greece, I love capturing the world through my lens. The thrill of new places, new perspectives, and new stories is always inspiring.

That said, I don’t want travel to be the only thing that gets me to pick up my camera. While a few trips are already on the calendar for this year, I’m making a conscious effort to keep my photography practice alive and thriving at home. Photography isn’t just about capturing far-flung destinations; it’s about seeing the world—my world—through fresh eyes, wherever I am.

Another factor that encourages me to keep shooting is a good project. Even if I don’t always complete a project perfectly, having a clear creative focus pushes me to keep photographing. Projects give me a reason to experiment, to capture images that tell a story or explore a theme, and they keep my camera close at hand. Sometimes, just having an idea to work towards makes all the difference in maintaining a consistent practice.

And, of course, there’s family. My family is a huge source of inspiration for me. Whether we’re out on an adventure or just enjoying quiet moments at home, I cherish the time I spend with them. Family is often the subject of my most treasured photos, and their presence always encourages me to keep shooting. The joy of capturing candid moments and preserving memories with them is truly one of the highlights of my photography journey.

For me, the key to staying engaged with my photography isn’t about grand new resolutions or constant novelty. It’s about recognizing the sources of inspiration that already exist in my life and giving them more attention. It’s about knowing what lights me up and nurturing those sparks.

So, what helps you pick up your camera? What habits, activities, or passions drive you to keep creating?
