False Spring

We’re at the point in the year where the weather likes to keep us on our toes. Sunny and 70 or snow showers and 28 degrees? Or both in the same day? You just never know. My yard is starting to green up, the blooming trees are in full force and my perennials are beginning to make their appearance. Even the radish and peas that I planted in our garden beds are starting to peek their heads out of the soil.

A “false spring” is a period of unseasonably warm weather in late winter or early spring that deceives plants and animals (including us!) into thinking spring has arrived, only for temperatures to drop back down to winter levels. In our case, I think Spring has actually arrived, but we keep getting bouts of winter weather that make it hard to fully get into the outdoor groove.

When I looked at the forecast recently, I saw that we were going to have a quick storm with snow predicted. It seemed like a good opportunity to do some before and after kind of photos to compare how my plants looked with a blanket of the white stuff. The before picture were taken Thursday afternoon and the after were Friday morning.

There’s something so beautiful in seeing the two season collide like this. It’s fascinating watching Mother Nature work her magic. And just for the record, it all melted again the next day.

Enjoying the spring, however it comes – Angie
