Palm Trees, Striped Umbrellas, and My Holga

We were lucky to escape to the beach for a few days this past month and I decided to make the most of it by bringing an abundance of film cameras. I was in the mood to play with a little Lomo Turquoise 120mm film along with my Holga 120N. Being an experimental film, you never know quite how it will turn out. Lighting, camera settings, and color saturation all impact the end result and the results can very widely.

I typically use Lomo Turquoise to shoot both sides of the film roll and the results are saturated blues, aqua greens, and gold as shown below.

While at the beach, I wanted to experiment in a different way with this film. I was curious about the softer color palette this film has to offer. I appreciate the way the Holga 120N keeps you guessing and adds a little serendipity to the process. I loaded the film and set out.

I was more than a little obsessed with the saltwater and cobalt blue striped umbrellas and decided to make multiple exposures.

All week I gazed upward at the beautiful palm trees and the white clouds against the giant blue sky.

I appreciate the depth of this film stock. There are so many different ways to shoot with it and so it always feels like a little adventure. I love the Holga cameras for the chance to let loose of control and to relax into the delight of what might happen. The warm tones of these images remind me of being on the beach that day playing with possibilities.

The long drive home was full of gratitude and a happy heart.
