Experimenting with art and photography rejuvenates me when I’m in a lull. I like to reimagine a technique and consider what might happen if I play with it in a new way. In 2022, I fell in love with shooting experimental film. In particular, it was a technique that involved exposing both sides (EBS) of a roll of film that intrigued me. I’ve traveled all over the world shooting cities using this technique and I’m utterly smitten.

I love the chaos and the beauty found in these layers; the humanity and saturated color.

A few months ago, I found myself walking the beach with my camera. I was looking for good light when the palm trees caught my eye. I’d souped a roll of palm trees earlier in the week and this felt like the next right move. What would palm trees look like shooting with the EBS technique in mind? I decided to experiment.
Golden yellows, orange, aqua, and teal hues with puffy white clouds straight out of a daydream. Hazy sun and the salt air layered with swaying palms.

Sun flare sneaking in the frame.

Palm trees leaning in toward each other; a bending.

The feel of these images is so drastically different from the cities. There’s a calm, peaceful beauty in them; a pivot from the chaos of the cities. Although my soul feels seen in the EBS images of the cities, I adore the loveliness of the palms. I had so much fun making these images! It’s a solid reminder that we sometimes need to take what we’ve been doing and turn it upside down. Have you been experimenting with your camera? I’d love to see!

I love these blues and oranges! You continue to inspire me!
I am in love with these images! The cities, and the palm trees — the subject matter being so drastically different and how unique and beautiful they each are.
