We head into the woods soon for our annual canoe trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. We’ve been taking both kids since they were small, and it’s something that everyone in our family really looks forward to every year.

The Boundary Waters is a designated wilderness area in far northern Minnesota. Set aside in 1964 to preserve the pristine boreal forests and waterways, the vast majority of the area is accessible only by canoe, portaging your camping gear from lake to lake on your back. This place is unique, special and magical. You can’t help but breathe a whole lot deeper from the moment you start heading into those woods. Is it a lot of work to do that camping? Absolutely. Worth it, though. So very worth it.

I’ll let a few images paint a bit more of a picture. Is this something you’ve done before? If you’d like to, let me know – I love little more than to chat paddling in the north woods.

All the best,
Alison
