Inspiration can be hard to come by in the cold, gloomy days of winter, which is why I find it important to have a group of creative friends to spend time with. Sharing a good cup of coffee, chatting about projects, and brainstorming new ideas with other photographers are a regular part of my routine.
A few days ago I attended an event hosted by a new local venture named The Wild Creatives. Kansas City photographer and founder, Tara Shupe, has a vision for creating adventure right here in the Midwest. She has a heart for connecting creatives of all types, an idea I can fully embrace.
At this initial gathering, we spent time in a lovely warehouse space (such perfect light!) and then headed out to the nearby riverfront park to see what might await us there.
What I love about hanging out with creative people is being nudged to see things in a new way and to find possibilities in the ordinary. We don’t have mountains in Kansas City, but somehow these mountains of gravel became a perfect playground for our imaginations.
Walking along the riverfront reminded me of childhood adventures spent near creeks and rivers, roaming and exploring with no agenda in mind. The fun is in finding the unexpected, bits of nature even this close to the city, an appreciation for the combination of man-made and natural beauty.
Cold and muddy as it was, this afternoon was energizing and inspiring. Outings like this are a good reminder to me that adventure is everywhere! Tell me, where have you found adventure lately?
P.S. If you’re in the Kansas City area, I hope you’ll check out The Wild Creatives and see what it’s all about!

I just love all the images in your post, but the silhouettes on the gravel mound is exceptional. I hope to find a group like yours here in Houston.
Angie, thank you! Finding a group to adventure with has made a huge difference for me!
