Great minds think alike! I have been wanting to write about Hipstamatic for a while now and was planning to do so today. A few weeks ago, my fellow Viewfinder Lucy Loomis wrote a post about the glory days of photo apps and wrote about the Hipstamatic TinType.
Just like her and, most probably, all of us photographers, we had ALL the photo apps. And boy, did we use them! I remember chatting with other photographers and downloading their latest recommendations as well as searching through the app store to see what was new or what looked like fun to try. Even my husband sent me links to the ones he thought I would enjoy.
Out of all these apps (many do not exist anymore), I still mainly use three: VSCO, Snapseed, and Hipstamatic. I love the community aspect of VSCO and the retouching options of Snapseed. However, despite VSCO’s many film looking presets, my favorite editing one by far is Hipstamatic, because of its ability to recreate a vintage or retro feel in the image.
The app includes a Classic Camera with lenses, flashes, and films, and a Pro Camera with controls for focus, white balance, and more. Also, its retro-inspired filters add grain and imperfections to photos to mimic the look of analog film. In March, Hipstamatic launched an integrated social network. I haven’t explored that yet but I plan to do so when I have more time in my hands.
As for now, I simply enjoy the thrill of taking an image and not knowing how it will come out (one of my favorite features!), the vintage filters, and the nostalgic feeling I get of the early days of Instagram, where their filters were so much fun to use… Today I’m sharing some of my favorite images I have snapped with Hipstamatic throughout the years, I hope you like them as much as I did shooting them!

This so feels like those early days of Instagram.
I am going to crack out the Hipstamatic app for sure!
