Dog Walks from a Flowering Friendship

Last year I shared how my friend Sara and I randomly text each other throughout the year, often sending photos back-and-forth across the day. Well here we go again, texting and dog walking and sending photos across three time zones, East-to-West, Philly-to-LA.

That’s us down there, Sara and Brandi on the left, me and Gibby on the right. I love how casual our snaps are; I almost feel as though we could be walking together. And how impressive is Sara with her “big girl” camera around her neck?!!

Lately, we’ve been bowled over by the flowers in our neighborhood. I’ve been sending Sara photos of trees, rose bushes and flower window boxes.

Sara’s been sending me photos of how gorgeous her complex is looking this spring, Brandi included.

Sara told me her neighbor’s kids have been building fairy houses around the complex. How adorable is that? She surprised them by building a fairy house of her own to share with them hidden amongst the flowers.

We loved that we were capturing bees on flowers too. How can you resist, right? That’s mine on the left captured in my garden on the Virginia Spiderwort, and Sara’s on the right from her neighborhood poppies.

Earlier this week, I sent Sara these photos from down the street, and she responded a few days later with a similar rose she’d encountered with Brandi.

Sometimes our colors and composition almost match up. That’s my columbine on the left and Sara’s ice plant on the right.

And sometimes they don’t! My iris on the left; Sara’s fern and clivias (?) on the right.

Part of the joy of sharing our worlds with one another is experiencing what one another sees day-to-day. That’s my clematis on the right, Sara’s lupine (?) on the left. Don’t you just want to dive into that glorious West Coast light!

I’m glad that Sara and I are still continuing our conversation through photos. Even though we we live very different lives quite far apart, our friendship feels close and fresh and special. I love that we photograph the same subjects regardless of how mundane or cliche´ or random or boring or whatever else it might be. Just knowing that we’re thinking of each other and our friendship forged in photos has stood the test of time brings me joy.

Thanks for joining us on our dog walks today! Do you often respond to friends in photos too? Share with us in comments.

Until next time,
Holly and Sara
