As often happens in the weeks and days leading up to my posts, I found myself looking through some of my more recent photos of my family. I’ve been trying to resurrect my daily shooting practice (and not totally failing – ha!), so I have a pretty solid log of our year so far. What I found myself noticing, though, I didn’t really expect.

For so long I’ve tried to stick to the old “fill the frame” adage. It’s something that has come easily with young kids who (I swear I love them to absolute pieces, but…) have really been within what seems to be an eight inch radius of me for more than a decade. My two are getting older now, though, and naturally starting to need more space.

It was so interesting to see that reflected back to me in how I’ve been photographing them lately. Some of it is a necessary result of taking photos at baseball and softball games and such, but I think there’s something else going on there.

I think they’re getting older. I think they’re not only pushing back in all of the natural ways of aging, but also in this way of expanding their worlds. They’re both growing into pretty excellent human beings, and I so love that we’ve been able to give them the space, both emotionally and physically, to really wonder, discover and explore. If that means I’m taking a step back and filling my frame differently now, I can adjust.
All the best,
Alison

I enjoyed seeing your images and reading your story. As a mom and stepmom of two adult people who no longer live with me, seeing your day-to-day of your kids captured as they are still with you each day, even with more distance, was very moving. Loved the snow scene, the hiking scene, the sports and all the ways your kids are active!
I do so love thi update on you and your photography practice. And always love seeing your children as they grow.
I love what you’ve captured in your day to day with your kids. And I totally remember the “taking a step back” time. This brings back all the memories. Thank you.
You are so good at documenting the day-to-day of life while finding the beauty in it!
Beautiful photos and reflections. I remember this time and how it was a little bittersweet. Of course now mine have flown the coop, and even photos from a distance are rare.
