Do you know how a cat stretches out in the sun but curls up in the cold? I’ve been like a cat in the cold, curled up in a ball, hibernating. I’ve been stuck at home, making soup, plugging up cracks and tending the space heaters so the pipes don’t freeze. My only time outside has been digging our cars out from under nineteen inches of snow while wearing multiple layers. Between the weather and the news, I have been in a slump. My creativity has been focused on keeping the house warm. My camera was sitting unused. Even my snowshoes decided to stop working this winter, which felt like another reason to give up.
For this post I planned to stay indoors and dig into my archives. But then today the sun came out, the wind was calm, and the temperature was almost up to 20F (about -7C). Warm enough to bundle up and go for a walk. I took my camera, equipped with a lensbaby lens, to see what we could find.
Unsurprisingly, we found was a lot of icicles everywhere. We all unfortunately know too well that ice is treacherous and ice can kill. But ice, in its natural state can still be beautiful.

The fresh air and sun helped me so much! I feel a little more expansive, like a stretched out cat.
Stay warm and safe my friends!
Deirdre
Gorgeous! The winter can be so hard, but I’m glad you took that step to look for the beauty.
This is so relatable, Deirdre.
We share similar weather patterns (might be a little worse where you are).
I have been in somewhat forced hibernation, which is enjoyable… to a point. Sunny days certainly help bring out the beauty of winter and your photos are a testimony to that.
Ah, how pretty! I’m in full hibernation mode, but try to run outside whenever I see the sun, which sadly isn’t too often these days.
So beautiful! I would love to see icicles like this one day.
I’m so glad you were able to get out on an icicle spotting walk! These are stunning.
