what if it were a perfect summer day?

The idea of a “perfect summer day” didn’t come to me after seeing these images when I got them back from my film developer several months ago.

Last year, I read a blog post by fellow Viewfinder, Alison Bents, about an inexpensive half frame film camera, the Kodak Ektar H35, which I purchased after reading her post. I shot images over a few weeks and sent my film in to be developed, with special instructions to print them as diptychs. Sadly, the roll came back not as I had hoped. The images were grainy, a lot shot in low light, not technically perfect, and not as diptychs.

A few months have gone by and I’m seeing these in a new light. Looking for things that aren’t perfect but that hold meaning for me. I decided to create my own diptychs.

This post is dedicated to my mom. She and my dad found the perfect place to spend summers so many years ago. Mom, I know you enjoy daydreaming about a perfect summer day as much as I do.

I’ve already loaded up my next roll and will experiment once again.

  1. Cool pics, as always. A good experiment, trying something new. Art doesn’t happen any other way

    • Thank you, AZ. So true. Love the experimenting and learning to be gentle with myself when things aren’t the way I had hoped.

  2. Lovely! I love how you shared your creative process Carolyn. I have found that so much is learned in the experimenting. Sometimes I step away from a project that was an experiment that I wasn’t pleased with the outcome. If I am open,. something new will reveal itself to me over time. It’s like a loaf of bread that needs time to rise in my creative mind! Your post reminded me of this and to keep experimenting and playing with our creative process. Your pictures and words certainly evoke memories and visionsof perfect summer days. Thank you!

    • Hello dear Betsy. Thank you for your comment. I love to hear how you step away from a project and then see with a new perspective. Also appreciate the visual of a loaf of bread rising and it taking time. Good things come from a lot of experimentation. And I love to think of you in your art room surrounded by your creative projects!

  3. These are dreamy, like memories. I am so glad you gave them a second chance.

  4. I adore what you have done here. The white space between gives the colours a vibrancy that might not have been noticeable if they were connected. And I love your words, sigh. This feels truly special.
