late frost

The first hard frost of the fall conjures up mixed emotions in me: sadness that the last remnants of the garden will succumb to the freeze, and a sort of childlike wonder at the beauty of the frosted landscape.  This year the warmer days and nights of autumn lingered well into November, with no frost in sight.

In the meantime I poked around in the gardens with the warm sun on my back, and enjoyed the last of the tomatoes and the lingering blooms.  I even got out the lawn mower in anticipation of cutting the lawn one last time. And then one morning last week, we woke up to a frosted wonderland, like someone had sprinkled glittering sugar over everything.
