Earlier this summer, I shared with you about how my friend Sara and I were living in a parallel universe experiencing similar Memorial Day getaways on opposite coasts. Over the years we’ve sporadically texted one another, often in photos. Since I’m three hours ahead of L.A. here in Philly, I often message her on dog walks around my neighborhood, sending pictures of things I see along the way while she’s still at work. She always messages back, and sometimes when she responds, she messages me back in photos.
Like when I sent her this one at the beginning of my walk with Gibson. Sara sent me a picture of her feet, also wearing blue with Brandi.
Then when I sent her a picture of my perspective with Gibby under the old railroad lines, she sent me Brandi walking up a gorge.
When I sent her Gibby with his tongue out while standing by a volunteer celosia growing out of a crack in the sidewalk in front of my house, she sent me a picture of Brandi’s tongue smiling back!
When I sent her a shadow portrait with Gibby on the sidewalk, she responded with Brandi walking on the sidewalk with her shadow, converging sidewalk cracks included.
It’s not just photos of our dogs that we share. Sometimes I’ll send her photos of oddities around my neighborhood, and she responds in kind. Like when I snapped off an abandoned, red car overtaken by weeds, she sent me an old red car hidden by leaves.
Or this tree a few blocks away, that looks like it’s leaning on the wall of a house. Sara sent a palm tree leaning away from a wall.
Here’s another of an overgrown backyard with a delicate vine growing up the porch post. Sara sent a closeup of a delicate vine overtaking a window.
I love how our similar views drastically differ on opposite coasts, and I love that we’re still sharing photos twelve years later after we first met. It’s a fun way for us to share our work – and our lives – with no lengthy explanations needed. Just a few words in a text and our current (and film past) view in photos. I don’t know about you, but I smell a photo project coming smashing together the east and west coasts!
I love this so much. I can’t wait to see what you do with a photo project.
This is so very very good.
Honestly, it would make such a good book. x
